Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Repowering a 65 motor sailer

Thanks Steve.
For me though , it gets down to how you intend using your hybrid.
I'll be motorSAILING .
Not having the mega dollars to spend , I'm looking to set up a motorsailer with a Swedish variable prop , which I believe will work well , motorSAILING.

Rob,

That's an interesting question at this point of the HYMAR PROJECT that he's currently working on with Dave Tether.

At this time he's testing and working with the manufactures to see what is possible. Prop (wheel) design is a big part of it as well as the general efficiency of all the equipment required to move a boat and live on board. The interesting thing here is they had to build a test instrument to measure the shaft thrust.

"We decided to add a thrust meter to the propeller shaft on the boat. This is not something that can be bought off the shelf as thrust meters for rotating shafts basically don't exist. It had to be built from scratch, and then calibrated for our application, and this is where we ran into trouble."

You would have thought this was a shelf (kinda) item…

I would think he's remaining neutral until he has more facts, that's his MO in the past since he is a tech writer. It still all comes down to the batteries; we need a break through to push us over the top.

Tom , may I ask of you please , could you tell me what Nigel Calder concluded as to hybrid efficiency , in his articles ?,

I haven't had the opportunity to read them.

Regards Rob J.
