Steve:

  If your electric company is nuclear or hydro, then you are not using fossil fuel to power your electric boat.  BUT the power losses of all of the energy conversions are still there.  Of the joules of energy from fuel rods put into the production of power by your elect. company, you still are probably only actually using about 10% of that amount at your prop shaft, and 90% is lost.

  You are correct, but many of those additional losses are also true of the fuel used by the power plant.  Digging the coal, processing it, transporting it, etc.

You make some valid points, but if you are going to take into account all the electrical losses along the way to your battery charger, you should also include all the losses gasoline has on the way to your fuel tank. For example, the energy used transporting the crude oil, the energy used refining, the energy used transporting the refined gasoline (or diesel), etc, etc.
