Re: [Electric Boats] mounting motor on glassed ply?

Hi Tim,

The site your referring to is mine, unfortunately I have had some difficulty with the Web provider causing it to be down at the moment.   The Ply that you see in the photos is just a pattern, the actual board is solid layup of Epoxy and 17 oz. uni directional cloth with a mat backing.  It was done under vacuum and is solid as a rock.  The mounts to the hull are also solid layup, a little bit of an over kill but I wanted it that way so that's the way we built it...  one of the reasons I used a solid layup of glass was to eliminate the salt water and salt air from the use of any aluminum and stainless fasteners, I also decided not to use any ply coring because of the crush factor and movement of the hull.   Since my website is not up at the present time, if you have questions that may be answered by photos please let me know and I would be happy to connect with you off list...

Subject: [Electric Boats] mounting motor on glassed ply?

Thanks for the replies on my ME-3001 post yesterday.

Another question:
How suitable is glassed in ply for mounting a motor and thrust bearing? And what thickness ply?

There are a few group photos of installs using ply, and I found this site where everything is mounted on glassed ply:
http://1698943.sites.myregisteredsite.com/id14.html

My current thinking is to make a ply mounting 'board' from two 3/4" pieces of ply, epoxied together, then encapsulated in several layers of glass cloth and mat. The 'board' would then be mounted inside the engine compartment using 1/4" marine SS right angles.

The board would have a cutout for the motor. The motor would be bolted to an etek motor mount, the mount would then be bolted to the board. The thrust bearing would also be bolted to the board. This arrangement would give plenty of clearance beyond the board for the pulleys and belt.

Any suggestions from you guys who've done something similar?
