You don't need a "spare" carb. switching between gasoline and propane is
as easy as flipping the fuel lever on the gasoline tank.

There are approximately 4 gallons of propane in a 20lb bottle.

propane has about 84,000 btu / gallon
gasoline has about 114,000 btu

1 gallon of propane is equal to about 1.35 gallons of gasoline, so a
20lb bottle has the same energy as about 3 gallons of gasoline, half of
what the article your read claimed.
