I consider myself a newbee to electric propulsion having only powered my sea kayak with a minkota and a 12volt agm battery.
The guys on this forum are very helpful and very patient with newbee
type questions. I would have been way more rude to the newbees who want to power their 250 hp waterski boats and dont even take the time to read
up on how impractical that would be.
What would be helpfull is more info from you and your particular needs.
What does your boat weigh?
Where are you going to be using it?(river, tide currents,ocean, lake, windy,etc)
Is the 8 hp motor the only motor on the boat or is it just for trolling?
My own take is-- If this is going to be the only propulsion on your boat you will need way more than 1/4 hp electric motor and you need batteries.
The main reason to add a gen to the set up is range extension/safety factor. You won't care about the gen making noise if you get caught out in bad weather against a tide or current with batteries low.
Going with a no battery set up is harder/more expensive than just buying a good efficient 4 stroke outboard.
My statements are mostly based on what I have read here and elsewhere.
I have done a small experiment with two 30 lb thrust minkotas on my 24 ft F-24 sailboat in strong wind. I could barely get it to roundup into the wind and it took forever to get to shore. If the wind had been stronger it wouldn't have worked at all.
So I don't think any one is laughing. You just need to tweek you idea
a little bit.
