[Electric Boats] Re: Moving a Hobo

Well, I know I replied, but it isnt here. Maybe I clicked on something I shouldn't have or didn't click where I should have.

Anyway, I dont think 5kts will be very likely with a trolling motor. Half of that, maybe, don't know. Even then, you want the most powerful motor you can get. Dont even consider less than 100lbs thrust. Go for a 36v motor and set up a 36v bank. Trust me on this... you don't want to be messing with 12v and the resulting crippling losses. Dont get a cheap one that has no PWM controller. Such a motor is okay run wide open, but throttling back is very lossy and inefficient. Better motors have a PWM controller and can be ran at reduced speed no problem.

A Torqueedo would probably do the trick. Or an electric outboard. 5kw should be enough power to get you up to your target speed.

Your panels are not big enough for true solar motoring. 150w is close to 1/5 HP. They would extend your range slightly, is all, and you might never even notice the help you get from the panels. Certainly, every bit helps, but that wont help very much.
