Electric Yacht has a parallel hybrid unit and has sold and built them for over the last 6 years. The systems work well and are designed to be coupled to a diesel from 20hp to 50hp. The actual output of the hybrid is about 8kW and it varies as the hybrid must be matched to the power output of the diesel and its capacity to provide power at different rpm. The unit does not have a clutch so that it acts as a pusher motor when the transmission of the diesel is in neutral and when the diesel is pushing the boat the motor can act as a generator. It will also generate power under sail. I cruised with one for three years and did the Newport to Ensenada race with it and found it to be a great fit for a boat too small to have a place to install a dedicated genset.

Items to consider:
The motor must be able to move with the shaft with the movement of the diesel as there are rubber motor mounts on the diesel.
The motor must be programed to the power curve and rpm of the diesel and be able to not impact the thrust to the prop of the diesel while under diesel power.
Building a clutch into the system is complex and that is where the economic aspect of the product fails to make the system universal.
The physical space in the motor compartment also makes the system universal appeal difficult as many diesels do not have space to install the system.
The best way to have a diesel electric parallel hybrid is to build the diesel with the electric between the power head and the transmission. Again, that is very doable but the market is so small that those who build this hybrid are not finding success. The best engineered system we have found is on the Steyr diesel - very costly and designed for powerboats with very large pocketbooks.
