Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Decibels

Hey John,

There's a couple of you running direct drive & feel it works good for you.
My concern is most folks are running thru a reduction gear whether a Lynch or Mars motor to keep it cooler so they're not losing efficiency from the motor running hot.
If I remember correctly you're running the 24 volt Lynch direct drive.
For me I don't mind "motor" noise. I just don't want to hear the hum of a belt driven sheave.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I'll try and do on mine
before my boat is sold. Out of interest, this is one reason
I went with direct drive, so my motor typically runs at half
the speed of a 48V system, with of course no gear or belt
noise either. I also used sound deadening in the engine bay
and of course motor isolation mounts and flexible drive
coupling. I suppose part of this could be solved by using
non air cooled motor. Having said all that I can still hear
the birds sing on the mainland when under power and before
I'm aware of the motor. In my small double ended boat
(26ft) the main noise is from the prop and cutlass bearing,
in part because they are not so far from the waterline and
right under my feet in the cockpit. It's still way
better than a noisy diesel though!
