I don't know, but I left the motor upside down with the top open, and there were no drips from the shaft.
Yesterday, I replaced the damaged connectors and tried the motor. It didn't work. So then, I tried connecting the red and black wires from the motor directly to a battery, with a 40A breaker in series. The motor ran just fine. So the speed control switch is ruined, but the motor itself seems OK.
I can get another speed control switch locally for $35, or look into PWM.
