Well, yeah, but then the motor would have the additional work of turning the engine over. Even with compression released, that is still a significant load, as you will know if you have ever hand started a small diesel. Unnecessary wear on the engine, too. The output shaft of the transmission is a better place to couple a motor because with the transmission in neutral, the motor does not have to turn the diesel.
