Hey "Roadtrip", A lurker here from SW Missouri. I build like you, and have experienced equal humble means. Attached is a set of scalable plans for a riverboat that might be of some use. It is a very basic design, small, but an enterprising fella could easily double or triple the dimensions and have a real looker for cheap. I found them online and are open source (no cost.) No compound curves and all mostly straight lines. Starts with a couple bicycle frames and can end where you like. Coaster brakes on bikes make for a simple over-running clutch for aux power options, and makes for a fail-safe backup, but not for open water. Has plenty of roof and if scaled up, could rival some good houseboats.Fyi, There are a lot of quality folks here that can offer similar ideas too. Good luck.Dan H.Sent: Friday, September 23, 2016 10:56 PMSubject: [Electric Boats] New member introductionI think I need to fill out a profile somewhere. I'll call myself Roadtrip. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here. Glad to be a member and hope to do more than lurk but I've not been very outspoken in groups. I'm moving from WA to FL but plan to spend some Summer months in WA.
At last I'm getting closer to a DIY build this Winter and checking out the waterways and backwaters of Florida. Have been dabbling in solar, microhydro, wind, and took a SEI ( Solar Energy International) class converting a VW Golf to electric. But a boat is where my enthusiasm is. Currently I'm interested in powering a freighter canoe. Then maybe a paddle wheel boat with both electric and small engine for range? Are hybrids discussed here? A John boat barge like hull and paddle wheel could be DIY on a budget. And power train components cobbled together on a budget. I have 6@150 AH deep cycle batteries for 72 volts. It's not much compared to some batteries I've seen but all I could get now.
The Whizbang AC sinewave components sound very slick. However there's a old school aspect that attracts me to DC motors, brushes, etc. I have a Curtis speed controller buried away somewhere. It might be for 24-72 volts if memory serves. Maybe for golf cart application. Theres plenty of golf carts in Florida but not enough electric boats. I'll try to remedy that. I could use more ideas to get started. I'm not an engineer but have built a few things that functioned fairly well IMHO.
That about sums it up. Is there anyone near the Treasure coast of Florida doing electric boats?
