I'm over 50 ("WHAT did you say??"), and have tried two different Torqeedo outboards (which put the entire motor in the water) - and I'd still say it wasn't "silent electric power". Probably not even what I'd call a "whisper" on full speed.
It wasn't bad. And a Torqeedo is much quieter than a gas outboard. (though 4 strokes are also MUCH quieter than old 2 cycle engines) But I think some proponents get a little carried away with the "silent electric power" tag line. It's not bad, but it's NOT silent.

Subject: [Electric Boats] Decibels
I've had my Electroprop system now for about a year and am overall very happy with it.
One surprise though is that the motor is not "whisper quiet".
Today I took some measurements with an iPhone app, Decibel 10th.
Tied to the dock, with the motor spinning at 1800 RPM (setting 3 on my 0 to 5 throttle) I observed the following:
85 dB @ one foot from the motor.
81 dB @ two feet from the motor with companionway steps in place
At the helm:
69 dB with companionway board removed
65 dB with companionway board in place
60 dB with motor off (ambient noise)
Can anyone share comparable measurements?
Thanks in advance.
