Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Li batteries

My situation is a boat, so space/weight considerations quite a lot different.
I think it will be a while before anything but a decently priced AGM will make a dent in the non performance/non promotional boat market.

Valence is setup to deal with car builders and other high volume value add companies. It seems strange that you could actually purchase directly but their prices are astronomically high in my opinion. I now own two of their BMS controllers but now find out that they require factory reprogramming to match your cell bank structure. I opened them up and they have what appears to be an atmel controller with associated reprogramming socket but I have no source code or firmware with which to reprogram the system with. On the other hand the batteries do talk RS-485 which is fairly straightforward and one could put together a PC program that parses the data then controls the charger or motor controller based on what the batteries conditions. I own a Brammo motorcycle and they also use the Valence cells in the Enertia motorcycle which interfaces to the cells and reports info back on to the user display. This is what I intend to do with the cells in my car but using a PC.
