There was something about this on another list... As I understand the
story, the VW Passat diesel in Europe gets 78 MPG highway (...not
quite 100... and city rating is somewhat lower, not higher) instead
of the 40(?) MPG of the gas model. The diesel version isn't available
in North America, even though it's made in USA.
And a friend of mine has a small VW diesel pickup truck that he says
gets 65 MPG, but only a few were ever sold in N. America.
Like the electrics, the car companies claim no one wants them - self
fulfilling if you won't sell them or let anyone know you have them.
