My son told me recently that there have been breakthroughs in using capacitors to store electricity. They offer fast discharge and recharge. Anyone else heard anything?
Not to the level of running a vehicle all day, but certainly now in commercial use to store braking energy on transit vehicles (trams/streetcars) and take the peak of their current demands when starting.
Trams are now being equipped with enough capacitor storage for them to move a 100-200 metres or more with out overhead power, so that they can cross 'historic' squares and the like with out needing overhead wires.
It is however an area with rapid development (each new commercial application boast greater 'unwired' range), but also a lot of 'spin' and outrageous claims for storage capacity and longevity that just fade from sight.
Look up capacitor powered trams and trolley buses if you want to see real super-capacitor applications.
