OK MB,
Need more bite? This can be obtained with larger dia. You must have clearance at the side of the prop, a big problem with most sail boats but Larger is better. Barring larger prop consider a Kort nozzle, that in effect does the same thing as increasing prop diameter. Most believe that a square prop is best.
Remember that a boat that has a hull speed of lets say 5kt in a 6kt current will still be going backwards. if your boat is fighting a current forcing you to go full throttle, you can easily use up your storage quickly. Best way to fight a current is be mindful of the tide. Although this may mean coming into port late, or at odd times, it still is the best way. I have been known to lay hove to outside of a entrance till conditions were right, but I was a cruiser.

Thank you. We 'live' on a mooring, so docking is not a regular activity for us. Our issue is a very tight channel into our harbor, with 9-10' tides, creating a current at mid-tide often strong enough to set the green cans on a 45 degree angle. When the wind is with the tide, it's not much fun. We hope the new 3-blade prop with greater pitch will allow us more power for all times of tide.
thanks again
