Re: [Electric Boats] Idea for Electric Outboard!!

Five problems I see:
1)  Not sure of the scale of the drawings, but the motors and props look tiny compared to the rudder and hull.
2) Using two motors to help with steering is a good idea "on the hull", but hung on the rudder, (if they are sized to produce any real force), they will mess up your steering while under power unless they a perfectly balanced. Imagine trying to power straight ahead with one of them failing. Now imagine putting one in reverse and the other in forward, all the twist will be applied to the rudder instead of the hull. Now put the both in reverse, (careful, you could break a wrist, arm or rib as the rudder slams over).
3) Rudders are not usually built to specs to double as engine logs, there will be a lot of pressure on your gudgeon and pintles.
4) It will be difficult to separate them enough to avoid turbulence from each other.
5) How you going to attach them? Swim? (Someone already added this comment on one of the pictures)  Removable rudder won't work, too heavy to maneuver easily.

Subject: [Electric Boats] Idea for Electric Outboard!!

Hi Everybody

I am in the process of completing the design of a sailboat i hope to build someday. I Dont want an inboard(electric or gas), i don't want a nasty gas outboard. So what I have thought up is this. I want two electric motors one that attach to my outboard hung rudder, one on either side. I was thinking they could be small motors like minn kotas or something maybe 2hp each. I would make them so they just clipped into a low profile plate that was always on the rudder that way, they could come on and off easily. anyway i quickly drew up the idea in sketchup, check out the pics and let me know what you think. thanks.

oh, p.s. motor suggestions would be of great help. also It would be nice if the motors had regen capability. thanks again everybody.
