Getting the prop(s) out of the water gives a big speed advantage. I have a Columbia 8.3 with an outboard that slides on rails on the transom:

When the OB is completely out of the water I get about 1knot more surface speed.
I'll probably be converting the outboard instead of installing an electric motor inboard. The speed 'advantage' of no prop drag is nice, and I really don't have the $$$s for a folding or feathering prop.
