Ken and King...thank you so much for all the incredibly valuable information and suggestions. I probably never would have been able to acquire that on my own without spending a bazillion dollars learning from a similar amount of mistakes and doubt I would ever have enough lifetime left ;-)
In the meantime, I saw a local Kijiji add for a (discontinued) Minn Kota 801 where the seller lives a couple of miles from me for $550 cdn. Lots of crappy reviews but at that price and he lets me try it on a dinghy I own to see if it works, it might be a way to get my feet wet (or give me a good rowing workout if it doesn't).
Thanks again guys. This site is worth way more than the cost of admission!
