[Electric Boats] Re: Sunplucker electric cat

I thought about and messed around with fairings for the minnkota shafts, but it just did not prove to have much savings. Turning the motors around for propeller first operation would decrease efficiency with these motors as well. The brush timing causes them use way more current in reverse, which you would have to do to run them prop first. Also, the shafts are under more strain and steering is funky when they run backwards. Must be the added bulk changing the "caster" of the motors.

So by your figures with such a light hull and no deck or weight to speak of, it seems to prove that you do not need to mod these simple trolling motors as there is little gain for the effort. And all the extra cost and complexity of your switching system also seems to prove unnecessary. I would like Lithium batteries for maintenance free and added range aspect though, but can't justify the cost. At least your readings prove my thoughts that I am getting pretty good performance out of my setup!
