RE: [Electric Boats] Duffy Electric Launch (alternatives?)

Hi Doug,

I just picked up a used 18' Duffy in July and LOVE it! I was looking for
something small to cruise the canals and marinas in my area because my other
boat is just too large to fit in the smaller canals.

For me, it's a great introduction to electric boating. I'm no stranger to
boating or electricity. The Duffy is a floating golf cart. Something breaks;
you get on eBay and buy a golf cart replacement part. You're not stuck with
a proprietary system and held hostage to the prices. You're not even stuck
with the "boat part" price premium.

Since I'm still new to the boat can't offer a whole lot of insight but the
thing I would look for is that if a boat is a 36 volt model, make sure that
the controller and motor are rated for 48 volts. That way you can always
upgrade another 12 volts. I noticed a Duffy on eBay right now that has a
motor stamped 36 volts. So I don't know if it and the controller are rated
for 36 volts only. Mine are both rated for 36-48 volts.

You can also call Duffy. When making my purchase, I emailed them to ask what
to look out for in a used model. They sent an email back and said to give
them a call. I probably spent an hour on the phone with the person going
over what to look for. Great customer service for buying a used model.

What really surprised me about the boat, and you've probably gotten this
with your steam launch, is the interest in it. My wife and I have been out
in the Duffy at least twice a week since we brought it home and have never
failed to get a comment on it! But I guess that's what drew us to the boat.

You probably got this with your launch as well... It's also a chick magnet.
Unbelievable. All the ladies, young and old, want to go out on the Duffy.
They don't want to go out on the 38' Magnum!!!

Dear electric boat enthusiasts,
I recently sold my 22' steamlaunch (Beckmann Mase) and at one time
considered converting that boat to electric. I have been looking hard at
the line of Duffy electric launches, BUT....

1) I also was aware of a launch called "Endeavor green" but they appear to
not be in business anymore? Was out of Tampa/Clearwater, FL

2) Elco boats are beautiful, but quite expensive.

3) Are there certain things to look out for in the Duffy line? Motor
brands, controllers, battery monitoring systems?

Thx
Doug in Chicago
