It seems it would give one the option of having a lot smaller battery bank if you only needed it for docking etc.
In the case of the OZ motor it can run up to 96v; but to do so reduces the life of the motor considerably, and this is why I like to know all about the whole system. It is cheaper for a manufacturer to run a smaller motor to death, but use a cheaper (less efficient or smaller and therefore overpowered) motor than run a better motor at a lower voltage to get the most out of it.
