I don't think that anyone here has said that an electric power boat can't be done. Your link shows a great example of an effective solution. Starting from scratch with an very efficient hull design made it possible. But that is a far cry from the conversion that was being discussed here. Starting with a boat that was designed for 500hp changes the problem quite a bit. Given the specific donor boat and the stated operational parameters, pure electric may not be feasible. It's kind of like entering an efficiency challenge with a box truck; the smaller, lighter vehicles will win every time.
Electric drive is a great solution, given the right platform and usage. But there is a reason that ICE vehicles and vessels have dominated the transportation world for so long. My 30' ketch and dinghy are electric, I chose not to convert my 27' racing trimaran on purpose. For that boat, a 9.8hp outboard is lightweight, simple, powerful, cheap and has a motoring range of more than 100 miles @ 7 kts for the all up drive weight, including fuel, that is less than three group 27 batteries. Different answers for different problems.

Why people wish to limit what can be done and cant be done. I guess there is a first time for everything and always someone to show the masses that hey it can be done.
