The moderator of this group mounted an electric motor on a gutted gas
outboard, though his setup is much more powerful than you'll need on a
Neptune 16. Another one of our local boating group has installed a Golden
Motor on an outboard carcass. One thing you've gotta think about is that
an electric motor has a lot more torque at low speeds than a gas engine.
This can result in sheered propeller sheer pins, or in the case of the
latter Coot a sheered woodruff key in the coupling between the motor and
the outboard shaft. This is most likely to occur when shifting from
forward to reverse, or vise-versa, especially if you don't pause to let
the propeller stop turning. Are there controllers that give a "soft
start?" You should also use a donor outboard of greater horsepower than
your electric motor, to get stouter gears to handle the torque. I'd guess
that a 1/2 to 1 hp. electric motor would be plenty powerful enough for a
little sailboat like the Neptune.
