Well, my old folding prop was 12" and I switched to a 14x10 3 blade. Hyoooge difference btw. Anyway I have a bit over an inch of clearance but if I push the shaft out an inch or a bit more I could probably turn a 16" prop okay. I think if the clearance is enough that you don't hear/feel the prop interacting with the hull you are probably good. Remembering also of course that bigger is better, in general. So there is a compromise at work there. And what is acceptable for a given size prop will also depend on tip shape, pitch, cup, blade count, hull shape, proximity to rudder or fin keel, etc. What I am trying to say is that any formula or ratio is just an extremely broad guideline, and try it and see is a better final determinant.
