Getting motor and battery information to the helm has been an issues as we use non marine components to build out our motor systems. To address this, the Electric Yacht QuietTorque systems have used their own electronic control module to address the need for motor information at the helm.
We have spoken to several vendors about sending the information to a marine MFD and, depending on the display, it is possible but at a significant programing cost. We have also worked with a independent display manufacturer for a custom display with full color graphics for both single and dual motor control. The cost of such a control has limited it to our larger 20kW to 40kW systems and especially for the dual motor catamaran client. Even with that display, the sailor at the helm is best served with specific data presented in direct numeric format.
The standard QuietTorque helm station allows for motor set up and re-programing: rotation (forward and reverse). throttle positioning, battery type, battery size, and regeneration setting (from Max to least free wheeling), communications to genset and multiple motors (catamaran), and back lite intensity setting.
Motor and battery information is as follows:
- Battery State of Charge
- Amp draw
- kW being used (- sign) and kW being generated (+ sign)
- % of charge
- Hours remaining to full discharge
- Motor RPM
- Heat indication in the form of an alarm and "Notice"
- Battery low charge status in the form of an alarm and "Notice"
- Battery pack on or off status
- Motor on and off status
A second helm station display can also be installed for monitoring information but it is not programmable.
