[Electric Boats] Re: Any experience or ideas for newbie electric conversion on Newport 16 sailboat?

It depends on how you want to use it.  If you just want to maneuver from the dock sailing or a mile or so from your slip, you'd be able to get away with a low powered (maybe 55lb thrust Minn-Kota or simlar trolling motor.  I did that with a Chrysler Mutineer 15 and it worked well but needed more than one 12V battery.

I would still put in two banks of 6V golf cart batteries if you planned on "motoring" much.  If you used a 12V motor like this, you could probably get 2-3 knots  easily with a reserve available by switch to the second bank.

It doesn't take much to move the Newport 16: i used a 2HP Honda Outboard on mine and it worked out very well.

Since you don't have a shaft, shaft strut, packing, etc. I'd steer away from trying to do a full installed electric conversion.

The Torqueedo would also work well, but the cost vs a trolling motor and good-sized battery bank would be likely prohibitive.
