I have over the last few years been looking at overall system efficiencies of complete inboard systems including propellers on mostly sailing yachts around 8 to 12m. These are the conclusions I've come to from battery to actual prop thrust, excluding charge/discharge efficiency of batteries for a range of individual and commercial systems. Remember systems often exclude an optimised prop and folk run with their old diesel one.
Good - 60%
Decent- 50%
Average - 40%
Poor - 25%
Whilst high efficiency is good in terms of range and battery longevity, it all comes at a price which all begs the question does poorer system efficiency really matter? I've come to the conclusion that optimising a system including prop for a particular boat is usually more expensive and whilst nice to have the best, the less efficient systems probably cost less with the main downside being reduced range. But just like a poor mpg car compared to a good mpg one, we can always back off the throttle. So in conclusion, efficiency whilst good isn't the be all and end all, but converting to electric in the first place is good regardless and can only encourage and enhance the breed?
