Are those amp readings at 12 volts?
I run a 16 foot pontoon boat at 24 volts with two MinnKota AT50 motors and get much lower amp readings.
But I am using a better controller setup than the Motorguides. I use a Curtis style golf cart controller (Hyundai) at 24 V and find it much more efficient than any of the trolling motor controllers.

Which reminds me, I must update that page, I have quite a few small changes but it's still basically the same setup.
