Re: [Electric Boats] What to do

That's a pretty cool looking skiff.  A trolling motor would give you maybe 3 - 4 mph and a 50 # 12v battery might let you go 3 mph for 45 - 60 min.  Trolling motors are meant for pushing very heavy bass boats very slowly.  You need something like a Torqeedo to replace a small gas outboard.

You could improve the performance of a cheap trolling motor significantly by adding a fairing to the shaft and adapting a model airplane prop.  That's a fair bit of fooling around but if you are up to it that is about the only way to get an economical trolling motor to do what you want.

Probably 4 kts and a couple of hours of range will be the practical max for your 15' skiff.  You are limited on weight carrying ability and have a short waterline.

Good luck,

I have a Wes Farmer Badger http://www.duckworksbbs.com/plans/wf/badger/index.htm with a motorwell and I am trying to decide what to to do for power.I would love to go electric but the outboards are very expensive.Would a large trolling motor work for me? I would like to travel at about 5 knots for as long as possble.I would like to use a rudder and have a controller of some sort about in the middle of the boat.Any ideas and what this would cost me?

Thank You
Mike
