[Electric Boats] Re: Siandra unplugged

Mark,
I think the problem may be trying to use the propulsion propellor for the electrical generation. Brad Van Liew did a segment on his hydrogenerators for La Pengouin on the Velux 5 oceans race website. Let me see if I can find a direct link to it.
He has these small propellors that have a small hydraulic system to adjust the pitch. This may be too complicated and expensive for the average cruiser right now and the speed of these boats is very different, but there may be some applicability in the future.

It also seems to me they would have been happier with having a Honda 2000 (or even a 1000) on board for occassional bulk charging of the bank. Also it does not make sense to me why they would put the motor in regen mode using more power to lock the shaft rather than motor sailing using less power and also gaining more boat speed if the prop rotation was such an issue. Interesting that they commented on the lack of maintenance and cost with their electric system as those of us who have converted have happily found out too.  I think they will be unhappy once they go back to diesel. But, then again they will have a lot more to write about once they do.
