Hi, G.,
I must have brain loss coming on or something, I did miss the point re
it being particularly interesting for regen., although I remained aware
that you presented it as interesting, not new.
Actually looks more suitable for propulsion through soft earth, rather
than water, as far as propulsion goes!
I too have the thinking that both 'services', propulsion and regen,
require two different designs, so I must be on the right track, perhaps.
I have it in the back of my mind for a later project, to use a prop that
is favouring regen, and use it for low usage propulsion as well,
remembering that unlike most full blown electric drives, my expected
usage would be for low minutes of propulsion per trip, - mooring and
casting off convenience, so propulsion efficiency can maybe afford to be
low.
I have a sneaking guesstimate in my mind that a 'prop' (turbine?) that
looks like an old American farm water pumping windmill, with lots of
blades, might be best for regen, to provide high torque at low flow
rates, (and unfortunately, high drag as well).
It would be interesting to run a boat at a set speed, and put a disc the
area of a prop 'coverage' in the water, and see how much the speed is
affected, especially at lower speeds that keep away from hull speed.
Interestingly, I just realised that the prop you submitted for viewing
is roughly the same as the (disintegrated!) plastic speed log prop on my
old boat. That figures.

I agree, and I never said it was a new idea waiting to be discovered.
The flow meter has a system designed to rotate based on water flowing
passed it.
Very similar to what is required when attempting to Regen under sail.
Propulsion & Regen are separate issues and trying to attempt to produce
practical results
for both using (1) sailboat prop seems futile.
