Bill, you might try that engineless approach. A day screwing around with techniques and you could be set for life.
On one translatlantic trip on a 80 foot racing yacht, we nearly sank mid atlantic, so the engine, generator, and all batteries were wasted. When we got to England, we easily sailed onto a mooring bouy in Falmouth, sailed off again the next day, and sailed into Lymington Yacht Haven. All with a delivery crew, not a racing crew. In other words, two people who knew what they were doing, and 10 people who had absolutely no clue.
Its not hard, and its a LOT of fun. You'll amaze everyone else, and save yourself a lot of bother.
