Re: [Electric Boats] Daydreaming about the next project, and Motorsailing?

specific to my boat [venture 21], the keels folds under the boat not draws into the hull, so it acts as directional stability in the folded mode as well as ballast under sail when extended 5' beneath the hull.

if i make her a power-sailor, i'll probably add a small cabin. this raises the boom so the main sail won't fit. moreover, raising the mast is a pita for an old crippled guy so shortening the mast has advantages, especially if you're passing under bridges occasionally.

the forestay is fractional so one could cut the mast down to the forestay and turn the main into a gaff rig. the gaff will return some of the lost sail area from cutting down the main but will necessitate removing the backstay and [probably]  add a couple of shrouds. simpler to just cut the main down in triangular fashion. also reducing weight aloft reduces the rocking moment when sails are down.

yes, this reduces sail area but we're going power anyway. we still have sails for emergency or as a helper to the motor[s]. with reduced sail area, we can reduce the bulb of 400lbs lead on the swing keel. as mentioned, i would want to keep a swing keel. we're adding batteries etc which makes up for some of the lost ballast. a steel plate without the lead bulb is more hydrodynamic. one needs to calculate how thick and long the steel keel should be re weight. at the extreme [no additional ballast needed] a weighted wood swing keel will work.

a hard folding bimini over the cockpit can hold solar panels. a small generator supplies emergency electric. i'm thinking of adding the outboard electric to the rudder, making some propeller drag under sail but leaving the outboard bracket free for a gasoline outboard i already have. another emergency power.

so, in this configuration we end up with an efficient hull, small-cabin electric cruiser with solar panels and auxillary generator, electric or gas outboards and fore-and-aft sails. oh, and this boat is supposed to carry enough styrofoam inside to stay afloat when swamped. if this can't get you home, nothing can.
