I am pretty sure it will work very well with 12 kW.

Your only constraint re: range probably will be energy storage.
A very large, 24 m long, 70 tons displacement, hull of a friend had a
100 hp engine (from a train).

It was vastly overpowered, and usually used about 10hp, with the
original inefficient prop.
A single tank of gas lasted all summer.
