[Electric Boats] Re: 50 HP diesel VS electric

Do u have propane or gasoline accessories aboard? If so u need a brushless motor. A 0913 or the current upgrade will give u 10 or 15 HP. That doesn't sound like much but with the proper prop and reduction it might be powerful enough for ur boat. This motor runs about $800 and a controller will be a bit more than that. If u have twin rudders, converting to twin screw might be an option that would give you excellent maneuverability and of course double the power available. Most electric sailors learn to make do with much lower speeds. 3 or 4 kts will GREATLY increase ur range. Just sayin. Your main limiting factor is ur battery bank. Can u invest $3k in batts, and tolerate a ton or so of batts? Do u have a generator? With a genset u can rely on the batts for short duration ops and supplement with the genny when voltage gets low. Do u motor a lot or mostly just use power for docking? Bigger boat, bigger volts. Consider a 96v or higher setup for ur boat. 72v minimum, I would think. Figure on researching this for a year or two before whipping out the credit cards. Most electric conversions are replacing old Atomics or smaller diesels on boats 15k lbs or smaller. There are much bigger motors available but the 0913 has a good track record and a large user base. If it would work for u then it it is a good ootion. I am leery of making an outright recommendation based on my own knowledge tho.
