[Electric Boats] Re: Electric Kayak

Hi Hannu,

You inadvertently doubled the pack size in your calcs.  Bob said that he was able to put together a 1200Wh 12v LiFePO4 battery for about $450.  He then said that he has two packs like this in his kayak.

As far as sources, Balqon lists 100Ah cells for $110 each, but I think that the availability of smaller cells like this is poor through Balqon.  Most of the regular US vendors that we deal with sell similar cells for about $150.  That makes the common US street price for this solution close to $600.

One of the things that I try to make sure that I do when quoting prices is to use readily available prices.  I know that great deals come along, now and again, but I try to make sure that those "special" prices are called out specifically with their caveats so that people don't confuse those deals with street prices.

That said, I paid a little less than $0.45/Wh (about $3400 for 8kWh) including tax, shipping, and BMS modules in 2009.  5 years later, prices seem to be pretty much the same if one is willing to look around.
