This is the deal. Converting 12 to 24 at let's say 1 amp output will require 2amps plus whatever the circuit losses are. A voltage pump is a diode-capacitor bridge that uses an AC input voltage. Same circuit found in the fly back on an old CRT monitor.

I would think a traction bank with a 24 to 12v dc to dc converter would be a better way. Let's say you want a 2 amp output that you fed to a capacitor to use as a house load supply. The supply load would be 1amp plus losses from the circuit. Because you need not charge a battery you will not have the losses associated with charging and discharging a battery for the house.

How much better can you get?

From what I'm finding on the web, voltage doublers and such look like they're great for powering communications circuits - but may not be practical for high currents.  

Do you have any practical experience on how much current can be drawn from something that would say, double 12V to 24V?

You should look up how to build a voltage pump. The makeup would tell you that it is a bad idea.
