Jim Rock back again.
My note on the 1020' long Voyager of the Seas is fully consistent with the 1 kW per ton starting point for design on our smaller boats to reach 90% of Hull speed. I think the scaling laws apply. The ship's hull speed is 42 knots, it makes 26 knots under trying conditions using < 0.36 kW/ton. I expect those of us with shorter hulls (mine is 23 ft water line) could expect to make 50% to 60% of hull speed at less than 0.5 kW/ton, but we would be moving very slowly, indeed.
