[Electric Boats] Re: Bearing Storage and Intermittent Use

store the bearings flat. a number of years ago when they first started shipping cars by rail the first train load of autos had to have all of the wheel bearings replaced. The investagation determined that vibrations in the cars caused micro notions in the races. Under load the bearings would failed in only a few hours. this eventualy led to the develepment of fretting corrosion theory. I would not be too quick to believe storage unloaded would cause damage but it theoretically is possible. FYI fretting corrosion is common in loose electrical connections that are vibrating since the corrosion is accelerated by current, galavinic scale distance of the involved materials, and dpresent of salt (sound familiar?). One of the worlds leading authorities(before he died) on this type of failure worked for AMP the former connector company. I was at one time a designer of machinery and my first experience with this type o failure was when the equipment failed after only 2 hours of testing.
