Synchronous drive belts are also a bit more expensive and not nearly as readily available as chains too but they are still the better choice if you can apply them to your particular application. You have to do your own cost/benefit ratio analysis and chains can still be a good choice because they are easy, versatile, and inexpensive. The best solution is probably a good gearbox if you've got the cash. 
 
Another good source for synchronous belts is the HVAC industry. They are being widely applied in large air handling equipment because of the fact that they are more efficient and quieter than the traditional V-belt.

The biggest problem we (and our customers ) have had with belts is slippage. If the timing belt is not tight enough or maybe more important out if alinement then it will slip and break off the teeth. We switched from a one inch belt to a two inch belt so that alinement problems are not as critical.
