[Electric Boats] Re: Hello

Good morning Bob,

I too saw the Harmony video, and impressed with their re-power project.

Unlike many here I'm trying to work out how to re-power my boat, as it was designed from the outset to be auxiliary electric powered (a Roberto Barros design POP 25).

My questions relate more to what brands/models of various components have proven reliable and durable.

While I slowly achieve each milestone of my boat building project I'm no better informed and no closer to committing to any particular e-power option.

It seems, the more I learn, the less I know, and I am all the more indecisive.

Like many here, I've seen the more professionally marketed electric motor systems and "packages" and cannot accept the preposterous prices they seem to think their motors are worth.

To be honest, it would not have occurred to me to use a commonly available industrial AC motor with a VFD.

In the new year, I intend to contact SEW Eurodrive who are highly regarded and globally represented. They design and manufacture gearboxes, motors, VFD/VSD's and all manner of other industrial control systems.

While my project was intended to be powered by batteries, I'm thinking that a smart hybrid power system such as the new Mastervolt battery/generator/charger/inverter combination products might be better suited to my application, than just batteries and some means to recharge them by sun or wind.

I hope SEW might offer suggestions. Should I learn anything of substance or value, I will share it.

Regards,

James.

I saw the Harmony video on YouTube and like the manner in which they built their system "off the shelf". I have built three houses for myself and now would like to build my retirement home, a 47' catamaran.
