Re: [Electric Boats] AC Motors? DC Motors?

Check out YouTube for the catamaran Harmony. It's your dream system, sans retractable props.

Subject: [Electric Boats] AC Motors? DC Motors?

Which do you prefer and why?

AC motors or DC motors?

I seem to find plenty of 15HP DC motors online, but can only seem to find very heavy and expensive 15HP AC motors.

After quite a bit of reading, I was thinking of using the following:

*3 Phase 208V AC Generator (21KW) - main power for propulsion, battery charging and large house loads
*3 Phase VFD Controllers - Anyone know how to fit Morse type marine throttle controls to one of these? The have buttons, I need lever arms??
*3 Phase 208V AC 15HP motors x2 - catamaran at 18,000 lbs max displacement
*Large, 3 blade retractable props, pulled up when sailing - it's a fast sailing cat

*3 Phase 208V battery charger
*Still sizing house bank, but have to keep it kind of small - not for propulsion, but for massive air conditioning and heating loads - difficult to select most cost efficient battery type - ThunderSky? CALB? Other?
*Large inverter to support these large house loads from bank, move over to primary generator when house bank is depleted, or when load is so great, the generator makes more sense.

Anyone know of any generator start controllers that can kick off based on measured amp draw? I have a LinkLite battery monitor... maybe that has some kind of setting that works for such a thing...

Any advice in general on this setup I'm working on?
