Re: [Electric Boats] Re: REGEN SUCCESS!

There is a detent (one forward and behind the neutral detent) on my motor control that I thought was the regen position. But, when I put the control there there was a solid four amp draw from the battery so I never did not keep it there. When I started to use the electro sail method I just go beyond that forward detent position slightly and was able to achieve regen. I did not experiment with the various throttle positions. I just put it where I thought the prop would spin enough to negate the prop drag which is just slightly ahead of the forward detent. I'll have to do more experiments once I have a meter that's in a better location so I can see how control changes influence the regen power.

Hey Mike,

That's great. You will be amazed at how small throttle adjustments will affect your regen once you get a meter at the helm. Your description of noticing regen while motor sailing makes sense, I have found that I need to have a fair amount of throttle on to get regeneration.

What are the control settings on the Thoosa for regen?

It was probably available all the time. I had recently started electro sailing instead of just letting the prop spin with the EP system off while under sail. One day when the boat was sailing along at 6 knots I checked the amp meter and noticed it had a  positive amp flow. Did the happy dance in cockpit! You can see the regen in action here on my blog:

Until I can rig up another meter so I can  observe the regen more easily in the cockpit I'll continue to check on it from time to time Though it's not easy to keep a constant eye on it with current meter location.  I'm still happy to know that it is working.
