[Electric Boats] Re: 3201 BROWNING GEARBOX

Hi Aaron,

Browning rates their gearboxes according to the model series (3100, 3200, 3300, etc.) and the gear ratio. My 3201 gearbox ratio is 2.55:1 and calcs out to 7.9hp or 5.9kW for 10 hours daily use. This fits well with my 5.5kW drive and my 30' 5 ton ketch. If I use the less than 3 hours a day rating, the power rating for my 3201 gearbox goes up to 9.9hp or 7.4kW.

A 3301 gearbox with a 2.58:1 gear ratio is rated at 14hp (10.5kW) compared to 7.9hp (5.9kW) for the 3201 at 2.55:1. Using the 3 hours rating, the 3301 is rated for 17.5hp continuous.

Alternatively, for the follwing ratios, the 3201 is 10 hour daily rated at - 2.77:1 = 7.4hp (5.6kW), 2.21:1 = 9.1hp (6.8kW), and 1.94:1 = 10.4hp (7.8kW). Divide any of these figures by 0.8 for the three hour continuous rating (rating goes up).

Realistically, even with a big boat, you probably won't be able to drive at full throttle for more than three hours because you'll run out of batteries.

Like James has recommended, I would pick a 3301 for for a 16hp system. For those who think that this is pushing the limits (I don't), you could move up to the 3401 which is 10 hour rated for more than 30hp, but I think that would be overkill.
