[Electric Boats] Re: battery article

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the links. They've got a lot of different product. I did find the Smart VH product that is based on Ni-MH technology.

They describe the main apps as E-bikes, scooters and other light EVs. These NiMH batteries weigh about 25% more than Thundersky Lithium prismatic cells for the same rated capacity.

Moving on to their rechargable Li-Ion offerings, we can look at the 28V LBB-ITAS

This "Li-ion rechargeable military battery system" are pretty similar to the capacities of regular LiFePO4 cells. They weigh about 10% more than loose Thundersky cells, but they come in those cool military boxes that are waterproof to 3 feet and will work at 50,000'. Unfortunately, the max discharge rate is C/3.

They also offer really small (and light) prismatic Li-Ion cells, the Li-Ion MP cells.

These are the closest to what we use today. I don't know the prices, but the MP176065 (3.75V x 6.8Ah) will build up to a pack (320 cells) that weighs half of what my Thundersky cells weigh for the same rated capacity. A lot more connections, but certainly a viable alternative.

That's my quick analysis.

It has been almost three years since the article was published, I wonder if they've moved the experiment out of the laboratory and into the field with a full size pack in a car on the road. I have a fiend that works as a program manager at SCE, I'll have to see if she can dig up an update on this initiative.
