Re: [Electric Boats] Ditching electric

I usually tend to stay away from arguments like this but this time I have to throw in my two cents worth.

If I remember my history, there has been a lot more "Blue Water Sailing" sans auxillary power of any kind vs blue water sailing with an ICE.  One famous one that comes to mind is Slocum's voyage's with the S.V. Spray.

Also, even today, diesel and petrol ICE's are being used by blue water sailors.  A properly installed/operated petrol inboard/outboard/genset is as safe as a properly installed/operated diesel inboard/outboard/genset.

The problem here is a strictly a matter of opinion and peoples reaction to conflicting opinions.  Remember people, opinions are like bilge stink.  Everybody has one, except the electric propulsion people of course, so accept that fact and drop this thread.  This thread is not serving anything but a forum for an argument.

Ok, so that was 25 cents worth.  Sorry.

Rob,
I believe, that this forum could function as a map for people, to decide, if going electric is for them.
Electric propulsion is for some applications and some people a great idea, for others a sure road to frustration.
It helps if you're the kind of sailor, who takes pride in sailing the max and minimal usage of the auxiliary.
It helps if you start by choosing, the right hull.
It helps, if you're rich.
It helps, if you're not electrically challenged
It helps, to have a good location
Etc.
So it is limited to a niche, where most/all conditions are right.
But that niche is slowly growing in size and there is a huge field for experiment and development.
If somebody, with a more administrative mind than mine, would create and update this status quo map of boat propulsion with different colors for applications between very satisfactory and totally wacky, such would be a useful tool for new members.
My 2 cents

That is the actual Classic Boat title to the article on the repowering of Siandra..
I want , as much as anyone on this forum , to see electric boating succeed . I want to be an active part of it.
But how much damage do well written articles like this do ?.
Dare I say it , how much damage does some of the "advise"given on this forum do , if followed through ?.
We really need to get "fair dinkum" , if we are to be taken seriously.
Thats all I've got to say.
Regards Rob J.
