[Electric Boats] Re: Ideal electrification system

Hi, Eric, re your final comment about optimism, sure, there has to be
some of that, but I personally went through phases of gathering info,
starting with optimism, then getting disappointed to a degree, then
finally gathering enough info primarily from this group to allow me to
make a good guess at what might well work for me. Bear in mind that my
minimalistic thinking is a bit off the beaten track.
It has taken about a year I think.
And that is to prepare me to build a reasonably SIMPLE and CHEAP system
from scratch.
And if it turns out a failure for the 26 footer, I surely must have a
good system for my smaller dinghy/tender.
I suspect that the key in getting 'the best' system is to not only
figure it out as you say, but also tread slowly.
I for one tend to get ahead of myself.
But for me it should be an interesting summer.

Any time someone asks for the "best" the only realistic answer is "it
depends".

What are your selection criteria? Lowest price? Highest efficiency?
Most reliable? Lightest weight? Greatest range? Some self-selected
compromise between all of these criteria?

As another example, what is the "best" type of cell phone? How about
the "best" make and model of car? Best airline? Best steak? Best
pencil?

There is no universal answer. This dovetails into the "electric or not"
discussion. Is electric better than ICE? The answer is still, it
depends.

You'll find proponents and detractors in this group for every component
that you mentioned. So what you're left with is what everybody here
that currently owns an electric boat did, do some research and make your
own decision. Unfortunately, by going the DIY route, you've got a whole
bunch of individual decisions to make and some of your selections may
influence your choices of other components.

I'm always surprised a the number of people that show up here, figuring
that they can build a reasonably complex and expensive system from
scratch that they have no previous experience with or knowledge about.
This is certainly an optimistic bunch....
