RE: [Electric Boats] Water Cooled Electric Drive

James-

With perhaps a majority of us still using electric brush motors to propel our boats, the advice that water is the best way to cool an “electric motor” is not sound except as regards brushless motors and to a limited extent for those few who use series-wound motors.  For the vast number of us who still use brush motors (and with 2 spare brush sets, mine will likely outlast the boat!), the “best way to cool an electric motor” is forced air.

FWIW, if I could justify going to a brushless motor, I’d also embrace water cooling as well.

The best way to cool an electric motor is with water, and the biggest heat sink in the world is only a few inches away from most of our electric motors, so it only made sense to make a water cooled electric drive.
