Re: [Electric Boats] Re: non used batteries life

Good point John. I think I just naturally adopted a good balance in my battery usage that also happens to allow for maximum life charge cycles. I fire up my Honda 2000 eu generator and start electro sailing once the AGM battery bank has dropped to 70% capacity. I do this to save amps and also minimize the time I need to run the generator once I reach my destination as I usually anchor. It also allows me to have a nice reserve in case I need it to buck some current entering an anchorage too. Those returning back to a dock and being able to access grid power may not have these concerns and can discharge a little deeper at the expense of life cycle charging.

Usage has to be considered as well as time in service.  Discharge/charge cycles and depth of discharge are the significant factors in battery life.  Batteries kept at a moderate temperature and in solely standby service should last a very long time, 10 years +.
